UPDATE – As of November 2020, this project shifted to focus solely on ASIST and only has limited support for safeTALK. In safeTALK’s place within the array of mental health promotion and suicide prevention trainings funded in Oregon, Youth SAVE (Suicide Assessment in Various Environments) was created through a partnership with the Oregon Pediatric Society, Association of Oregon Community Mental Health Program, and Oregon Health Authority. As of 2024, REAP manages Youth SAVE, Youth SAVE for Young Adults, and Youth SAVE for ODHS Child Welfare in collaboration with the Oregon Health Authority, and the Oregon Pediatric Society manages Youth SAVE for Primary Care. Youth SAVE is a virtual training designed to empower school staff and community-based professionals to effectively assess and intervene with youth and young adults who are experiencing thoughts of suicide. Participants will apply an equity lens to suicide prevention and intervention with youth and discuss how to collaboratively engage in safety planning.
This project is a part of a larger effort by the Oregon Health Authority to expand suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention training capacity. This includes trainings such as Sources of Strength, Mental Health First Aid, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), Youth SAVE (Suicide Assessment in Virtual Environments), and Connect Postvention. To learn more about this project and other trainings related, check out this flyer showing the different programs along the prevention spectrum.
In addition to the aforementioned trainings, Oregon Health Authority also funds the Oregon Alliance to Prevent Suicide which oversees the implementation of the five-year Youth Suicide Intervention and Prevention Plan (YSIPP). To learn more about the Alliance or get involved, check out their website.
